Originally scheduled to sail in the Middle East from November 2026 to April 2027, MSC World Europa will now operate 7- and 14- night itineraries with embarkation in Fort-de-France (Martinique), Pointe-à-Pitre (Guadeloupe) and Bridgetown (Barbados) as well as calls to Castries (Saint Lucia) and Saint George (Grenada), Philipsburg (St. Maarten/ Netherlands Antilles), St. John (Antigua and Barbuda), Basseterre (Saint Kitts and Nevis) and Roseau (Dominica), Kingstown (Saint Vincent and the Grenadines).

This adjustment offers guests a perfect winter-sun experience in one of the world’s most desirable warm-weather destinations, while offering all the innovative features and next-generation guest experiences for which MSC World Europa is known.

The deployment change sees MSC World Europa replacing MSC Seaview, which will be redeployed to Brazil and Argentina for the Winter 2026/2027 season, further reinforcing MSC Cruises’ commitment to offering diverse choices across its global portfolio. MSC Seaview’s itinerary for South America will be available soon.

Guests booked on MSC World Europa for Winter 2026-2027 and their travel partners are being contacted directly and provided with clear, comprehensive information regarding their options, including the possibility to move their booking to another sailing or request a full refund.

Guests booked on MSC Seaview sailings from the French Antilles this coming winter will see no change to their itinerary, dates and overall cruise experience, with no action required from guests. This will mark MSC World Europa’s first season in the region – one of MSC Cruises’ most innovative ships, offering the latest onboard design and features.

MALTA PM TOURS MSC WORLD EUROPA AS SHIP OFFICIALLY INAUGURATES VALLETTA SHORE POWER

Malta’s Prime Minister Robert Abela today toured MSC World Europa in Valletta as the ship officially inaugurated the port’s shore power facility, the first to be operational in the Mediterranean Sea.

Valetta’s local power grid supplied electricity for all MSC World Europa’s operations while the ship was berthed to allow all engines to be switched off and eliminate the vessel’s direct emissions at the port to improve local air quality.  

The Prime Minister was shown around the 22-deck LNG-powered ship by the Master of MSC World Europa, Captain Stefano Battinelli.  Mr Abela and other Maltese government officials were also given a presentation by Michele Francioni, MSC Cruises’ Chief Energy Transition Officer, on the line’s decarbonisation strategy to achieve net zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050 for its marine operations.

The vessel is operating 7-night cruises throughout 2024 and 2025 between Malta, Spain, France and Italy.   

Michele Francioni, Chief Energy Transition Officer, MSC Cruises, said, “Shore power is one very important element of our continued commitment towards decarbonisation with most of our fleet equipped to eliminate local emissions and improve local air quality when the ships are at berth in port, and we can switch off their engines as local shoreside electricity powers the operation.

“It was a great honour to show the Prime Minister of Malta of how his country has led the way for shore power in the Mediterranean Sea, our major market for holidays at sea, and we look forward to many more ports in the region and throughout the world being equipped in the future so that the cruise and broader maritime sector can further reduce local emissions in ports.”

MSC Cruises’ target by the end of 2024, when 16 of the line’s 22 vessels will be equipped to receive shoreside electricity at a port, is for 220 shore power connections among its fleet at destinations in China, Norway, Germany, the UK and Malta.  As more ports make shore power available, MSC Cruises’ ships will use local electricity grids.  

MSC Cruises aims to add at least 15 new ports to its shore power plan between 2024 and 2026.  Among them are Barcelona, Hamburg, Valencia, Marseille, Copenhagen, and five in Italy at Genoa, La Spezia, Civitavecchia, Naples and Trieste, plus at the company’s new cruise terminal in Miami that will become fully operational next year.

Geneva, Switzerland, 18 December 2023 – MSC Cruises continues to advance its commitment to environmental sustainability by successfully connecting MSC World Europa to shore power in the port of Valetta, Malta – the first operational shore power facility in the Mediterranean.

The line is committed to the use of shore power wherever it is available, as it is an integral part of the company’s journey towards net zero greenhouse gas emission operations by 2050.  Using shore power allows a ship to connect to the local power grid and removes the need to keep a ship’s engine running, which eliminates direct emissions while the vessel is connected in port.

MSC Cruises performed the first tests earlier this year at Valletta and the experience gained has contributed to refining the shore power implementation process.  MSC World Europa from now on will connect to the shore power facilities while calling in Valetta. The ship will call every week throughout the whole of next year and 2025.

Since 2017, every new ship joining the MSC Cruises fleet has been equipped with a shore power connection and plans are underway to retrofit ships. The line has been able to increase the number of port calls utilising shore power electricity as more ports introduce shore power facilities. The historic connection in Valetta, follows the recent successful connections in Northern Europe – including Warnemünde in Germany, the Norwegian ports at Bergen, Aalesund and Haugesund, and Southampton in the UK. Earlier this year, MSC Cruises inaugurated the new shore power facility in Kiel, Germany. 

MSC Cruises aims to add at least 15 new ports to its shore power plan between 2024 and 2026, focusing on a number of ports in Italy, including Genoa, La Spezia, Civitavecchia, Naples and Trieste, as well as prominent ports such as Barcelona, Hamburg, Valencia, Marseille, Copenhagen, and the new cruise terminal in Miami that opens next year, will feature shore power capabilities. MSC Cruises acknowledges the importance of collaboration with ports and regions in achieving sustainable maritime practices. The company signed a Memorandum of Understanding to enhance shore power facilities in the Baltic Sea area, and similar commitments are being pursued with other ports in the Mediterranean Sea.

Geneva, Switzerland, 12 April 2023 – MSC Cruises’ innovative new ship – MSC World Europa – has arrived in Europe to commence her first summer season in the Mediterranean. Delivered in October 2022 by French shipbuilder Chantiers de l’Atlantique, MSC World Europa is MSC Cruises’ largest vessel and the first to be powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG). MSC World Europa is the best performing large cruise ship operating in the world in terms of CO2eq emissions per passenger.

An MSC spokesperson said: “It is with great pride that we welcome MSC World Europa in Europe as she starts her first summer season in the Mediterranean. This groundbreaking vessel is a testimony of our unwavering commitment to sustainable cruising, with a range of unprecedented innovations in terms of environmental and marine technologies. MSC World Europa represents a major step forward on our journey towards meeting our target of net-zero emissions by 2050.”  

The ship will be powered by LNG throughout the summer season, with her first bunkering in Marseille scheduled on 15 April 2023. LNG is the cleanest marine fuel currently available at scale. Compared to standard marine fuels, LNG virtually eliminates local air pollutant emissions – including sulphur oxides and fine particles – and reduces nitrogen oxides by up to 85 per cent.

LNG also plays a key role in climate change mitigation as it offers up to a 20 per cent reduction in greenhouse gas emissions and is paving the way for the uptake of sustainable non-fossil fuels such as bio- and synthetic LNG.

Unique fuel cell technology showing promising results

MSC World Europa is the world’s first contemporary cruise ship to feature brand new solid oxide fuel cell (SOFC) technology powered by LNG. The ship includes a 150-kilowatt SOFC demonstrator that uses LNG to produce electricity and heat on board in a highly efficient way by means of an electrochemical reaction.

This could be a key to unlocking significant environmental sustainability gains in the future. Thanks to this increased efficiency, SOFC has the potential to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases substantially compared with a conventional LNG engine without producing emissions of nitrogen oxides, sulphur oxides or fine particles.  One great advantage is that not only is the cell compatible with LNG, but also with possible new sources of low carbon fuels such as green methanol, ammonia, liquid hydrogen and bio or synthetic LNG.  

Linden Coppell, Vice President of Sustainability & ESG at MSC Cruises, said: “Nearly six months into testing, the fuel cell performance has been excellent, and we haven’t seen any signs of safety or maintenance issues. The efficiency to date – measured in terms of the energy we can generate from the same unit of fuel – is well above that of an internal combustion engine and has exceeded our expectations. We have operated the system continually and it has delivered a steady output even better than our forecast 150-kilowatt return. Obviously, this is a small fraction of the energy we need but we are confident that the system can be scaled up on future newbuilds. We recognise that this will requires close collaboration with partners across and outside of our industry, which is why MSC Cruises is actively involved in several different research initiatives and partnerships that all share the common objective of accelerating the transition toward a net-zero future.”

A range of other environmental features

MSC World Europa is equipped with shore power plug-in connectivity to reduce carbon emissions in port, as well as with an advanced wastewater treatment system (AWTS) that meets the world’s highest regulatory requirements, including the so-called Baltic standard. It treats all wastewater produced onboard to close to tap water standards. The ship also includes a ballast water treatment system that prevents the introduction of invasive species in the marine environment through ballast water discharges, in full compliance with IMO’s Ballast Water Management Convention.

The vessel has an entire team of crew dedicated to implementing the strict waste management protocols which separate all wastes into seven distinct types, for example, glass, aluminum and paper, with specialised equipment to crush or bundle these waste types in the ship’s waste management facility.

In addition, MSC World Europa features underwater radiated noise management system to minimise disturbance to marine life and a comprehensive range of onboard energy efficient equipment to optimise engine use and hotel energy needs to reduce emissions further. It is also fitted with enhanced automatic data collection systems for remote energy monitoring and advanced analysis, allowing real-time shoreside support to optimise operational efficiency onboard.

During this first summer season the Mediterranean, guests on board MSC World Europa will be able to experience the trailblazing ship’s extraordinary features and impressive spaces, including the spectacular World Promenade, immersive culinary experiences, next-level entertainment options and the largest, most action-packed kids’ area in MSC Cruises’ fleet.

Together with partners Qatar Airways, the celebrations are part of MSC’s overall commitment to Qatar, reinforcing its commitment to supporting the growth of international tourism there as well as the broader Middle East region, where MSC Cruises is brand leader.

MSC World Europa is the most innovative and environmentally advanced cruise ship in the MSC Cruises fleet. On top of ground-breaking advances in terms of reduction of emissions and energy efficiency, the LNG-powered ship also paves the way towards the uptake of carbon-neutral synthetic and other alternative fuels as soon as they are available at scale.

In addition, MSC World Europa will feature selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems, shore-to-ship power connectivity, advanced wastewater treatment systems to comply with the so-called Baltic standard, the strictest global standard for wastewater disposal to sea, an underwater radiated noise management system to reduce potential noise and vibration impact on marine mammals, as well as a wide range of energy efficient equipment and systems to optimise engine use.

Doha, Qatar and Geneva, Switzerland, 07 September 2022 – The Cruise Division of MSC Group in partnership with Qatar Airways today announced that the naming ceremony for MSC Cruises’ trailblazing new flagship, MSC World Europa, will take place on 13 November in Doha, the capital of Qatar, where she will officially inaugurate the city’s brand new Grand Cruise Terminal.  This latest announcement is part of MSC’s overall commitment to Qatar and the continued importance of the Middle East, where MSC Cruises is brand leader, and also supports Qatar’s Vision 2030 pledge to triple the number of international tourists visiting the country by that year.

The ship naming ceremony is set to be a glamourous and star-studded event and celebrated with an outstanding array of stunning live entertainment and performances as well as the traditional maritime bottle breaking moment to name a new ship against the backdrop of a firework-lit stunning cityscape skyline of Doha. The special occasion will take place at Doha’s brand new Grand Cruise Terminal, a state-of-the-art 24,000 square metres facility that will handle up to 28,000 passengers a day and has the capacity to host two mega-cruise ships a day.  Cruise passengers are set to enjoy an incredible aquarium in the terminal and a gallery that specialises in Islamic art, among its many features.      

The ship will make for her maiden voyage on December 20, offering 7-night cruises to Doha, Qatar, Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sir Bani Yas Island, United Arab Emirates, plus Dammam, Saudi Arabia. For the upcoming winter season MSC Opera will also offer 7-night itineraries in the Gulf region to Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Sir Bani Yas island plus two destinations in Oman – Muscat and Khasab.

MSC World Europa from March 2023 will then move to the Mediterranean Sea where she will offer 7-night cruises to the Italian ports of Genoa, Naples and Messina, as well as Valletta in Malta, Barcelona in Spain and Marseille in France.

MSC World Europa will be the first liquefied natural gas (LNG)-powered vessel in MSC Cruises’ fleet and the most environmentally advanced to date.

It virtually eliminates local air pollutant emissions like sulphur oxides and reduces nitrogen oxides by up to 85 per cent.

LNG also plays a key role in climate change mitigation as it reduces CO2 emissions by 25 per cent and is paving the way for the uptake of sustainable non-fossil fuels including green hydrogen. A demonstration fuel cell onboard will test the efficiency of this technology as a means to produce heat and electricity about 30 per cent more efficiently.

MSC World Europa will also feature selective catalytic reduction systems, shore power plug-in connectivity to reduce carbon emissions in port, advanced wastewater treatment systems designed in line with the United Nations’ shipping body the International Maritime Organization, food and waste recycling, underwater radiated noise management system to help protect marine life and a comprehensive range of onboard energy efficient equipment to optimise engine use and further reduce emissions.

The Swiss-based line has a long-term goal to achieve net zero greenhouse gas emissions for its operations by 2050. This will be achieved by investing and supporting the accelerated development and implementation of innovative, cutting-edge technologies to be deployed across the Company’s fleet of ships.

Geneva, Switzerland – 25 May, 2022 – This year MSC Cruises is introducing the highly anticipated MSC World Europa to its fleet – the first in the trailblazing ‘World Class’ ships. The new ship will introduce a completely new cruising platform that boasts future-proof marine and onboard hospitality technologies as well as ground-breaking and ultramodern design. One of the highlights of the ship will be an enhanced MSC Yacht Club. The innovative “ship within a ship” concept is an all-inclusive cruise experience that set a new standard of premium cruising when it was introduced in 2008 by offering guests privacy and exclusivity as well as being able to enjoy all the facilities a larger ship can offer.

Key Highlights of the MSC Yacht Club on MSC World Europa include:

A totally reimagined sundeck –spanning two decks, guests have plenty of space to enjoy the ultimate sea views from the front of the ship. The lower deck allows guests to unwind and sip a glass of champagne from the bar or a bite to eat from the grill whilst the upper deck is home to a private pool and whirlpool where guests can take in the sun on comfortable loungers or one of the stylish private cabanas.

Two brand-new ultra-spacious Owner-Suites exclusive to World Class ships, these luxurious multi-room suites total over 150m2 between indoor areas and private balcony. The plush suites consist of a double bedroom, with walk-in wardrobe and bathroom complete with full-size imperial bathtub which connect to a separate living-dining area bathed in light thanks to floor-to-ceiling windows. For the ultimate VIP experience, guests step onto their own spacious balcony with al fresco dining area and whirlpool bath.

Double-balcony Duplex Suites – These two-deck suites offer a whole floor dedicated to luxurious relaxation with dining area, lounge and guest washroom. Heading upstairs, the main bedroom has its own bathroom, complete with bathtub. These special duplex suites offer two private sundecks, the lower deck offers a private whirlpool bath, seating and lounge area, and an upper deck for sunbathing with comfortable loungers.

Geneva, Switzerland – 12 May 2022. In just six months MSC Cruises will launch its most innovative, most environmentally advanced and most exciting ship to-date: MSC World Europa. This eagerly anticipated new flagship is the first from the trail-blazing World Class prototype, spanning 22 decks, 47 metres wide, with 2,626 cabins and boasting more than 40,000mof public space. This ultramodern urban metropolis at sea is the future of cruising and will offer a veritable world of different experiences pushing the boundaries of what is possible at sea – setting a new standard for the cruise industry.

With so many brand-new features and whole world of experiences to discover, here are 9 reasons why MSC World Europa will be the ultimate ship to launch in 2022.

1.) The Promenade – the beating heart of the ship

The 104-metre long, 7 deck-high outdoor World Promenade is one of the most impressive spaces in this incredible ship. Opening out onto the aft of the ship with breath-taking sea views, this is the place to be day or night with entertainment and al-fresco dining space. The crowning glory of the promenade is a striking architectural masterpiece: The Venom Drop @ The Spiral spanning 11 decks. Not only beautiful with its sleek stainless-steel curves, but those feeling brave can take it on as they jump on the longest dry slide at sea, and traverse down 74 metres, the most fun (and quickest) way to get from the top of the ship to the promenade.

Connected to this is the indoor promenade is the World Galleria spanning 2,214m and topped with an awe-inspiring LED and kinetic dome ceiling – his is the perfect place to browse and enjoy the various lined bars, restaurants, shops and boutiques.

MSC World Europa will transport guests on a gastronomic journey around the world with an incredible choice of 33 restaurants, bars and lounges each with its own distinct style and ambiance. Globally inspired menus and best-in-class culinary artistry combined with an abundant variety of quality ingredients, prepared with passion and authenticity will all result in exceptional eating and drinking experiences.

The ship will offer a spectacular range of 13 restaurants, including 6 specialty restaurants with two brand new concepts for MSC Cruises:

  • Chef’s Garden Kitchen the first hydroponic garden at sea where the ingredients literally take centre stage with micro herbs, salads and garnishes grown and harvested on board
  • La Pescaderia, this signature Mediterranean fish restaurant will serve the freshest fish. Sophistication meets casual and family dining, a must for all guests!

MSC World Europa will spend her inaugural season in the Gulf giving guests the ultimate winter cruise experience. Her season will commence on 20 December with a special 4-night sailing from Doha in Qatar to Dubai, United Arab Emirates.

MSC World Europa will then offer 7-night cruises from Dubai to the nearby modern metropolis of Abu Dhabi, on to Sir Bani Yas Island, where guests will have a chance to discover an exotic array of wildlife or bask in the warm sun on the immaculate beaches, all exclusive to MSC Cruises on the days which the ships call. Her programme in the Gulf has been enriched with calls in the port of Dammam, Saudi Arabia, visiting Al Ahsa oasis, a UNESCO World Heritage site. The ship also calls Doha, the futuristic capital of Qatar, before returning to Dubai with an overnight in the city to discover all the marvels it has to offer.

Departing Dubai on 25 March 2023, MSC World Europa will head to the Mediterranean Sea. In summer 2023, she will offer 7-night cruises calling the Italian ports of Genoa, Naples and Messina, as well as Valletta in Malta, Barcelona in Spain and Marseille in France.

MSC World Europa will be the first LNG-powered vessel in MSC Cruises’ fleet and the most environmentally advanced to date. It virtually eliminates local air pollutant emissions like sulphur oxides and reduces nitrogen oxides by up to 85%. In addition, MSC World Europa will feature selective catalytic reduction (SCR) systems, shore-to-ship power connectivity, advanced wastewater treatment systems to comply with the so-called Baltic standard, the strictest global standard for wastewater disposal to sea, an underwater radiated noise management system to reduce potential noise and vibration impact on marine mammals, as well as a wide range of energy efficient equipment and systems to optimise engine use.
