CHACCHOBEN MAYAN RUINS
Explore the ancient ruins of Maya pilgrimage site Chacchoben during this approximately four-hour excursion. You’ll learn all about the history and stories of this important site from your guide, as well as visiting temples and pyramids.
Total duration: 4 hours
Chacchoben was once a large Maya settlement and prestigious ceremonial centre. Thought to have been settled in 200 BC, its remaining structures – largely temples, ritual plazas and pyramids – date back to 700 AD. Discover their storied past during this approximately four-hour excursion.
After a short time to meet at the end of the pier, board a bus for the approximately 50-minute drive to Chacchoben. Information about the site and the history of the Maya civilisation will be provided during the ride.
Once arrived, disembark the coach and step back in time. Over the course of approximately two hours, visit ancient structures, including temples and excavated pyramids, learning about their history and purposes from your guide. Look out for remnants of the original decoration that have endured for hundreds of years, such as red paint on the walls.
The tour also includes the option to climb Gran Basamento, an elevated platform, which provides fantastic views for photos. Over the course of the day, you’ll also learn a little about the area’s rich plant life and wildlife – the areas surrounding Chacchoben are home to diverse species, including howler monkeys, armadillos and even jaguars and pumas in the deeper jungle.
A coach transfer of around 50 minutes then returns to the port.
