MALTA PM TOURS MSC WORLD EUROPA AS SHIP OFFICIALLY INAUGURATES VALLETTA SHORE POWER

MALTA PM TOURS MSC WORLD EUROPA AS SHIP OFFICIALLY INAUGURATES VALLETTA SHORE POWER

Malta’s Prime Minister Robert Abela today toured MSC World Europa in Valletta as the ship officially inaugurated the port’s shore power facility, the first to be operational in the Mediterranean Sea.

Valetta’s local power grid supplied electricity for all MSC World Europa’s operations while the ship was berthed to allow all engines to be switched off and eliminate the vessel’s direct emissions at the port to improve local air quality.

The Prime Minister was shown around the 22-deck LNG-powered ship by the Master of MSC World Europa, Captain Stefano Battinelli.  Mr Abela and other Maltese government officials were also given a presentation by Michele Francioni, MSC Cruises’ Chief Energy Transition Officer, on the line’s decarbonisation strategy to achieve net zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050 for its marine operations.

The vessel is operating 7-night cruises throughout 2024 and 2025 between Malta, Spain, France and Italy.

Michele Francioni, Chief Energy Transition Officer, MSC Cruises, said, “Shore power is one very important element of our continued commitment towards decarbonisation with most of our fleet equipped to eliminate local emissions and improve local air quality when the ships are at berth in port, and we can switch off their engines as local shoreside electricity powers the operation.

“It was a great honour to show the Prime Minister of Malta of how his country has led the way for shore power in the Mediterranean Sea, our major market for holidays at sea, and we look forward to many more ports in the region and throughout the world being equipped in the future so that the cruise and broader maritime sector can further reduce local emissions in ports.”

MSC Cruises’ target by the end of 2024, when 16 of the line’s 22 vessels will be equipped to receive shoreside electricity at a port, is for 220 shore power connections among its fleet at destinations in China, Norway, Germany, the UK and Malta.  As more ports make shore power available, MSC Cruises’ ships will use local electricity grids.

MSC Cruises aims to add at least 15 new ports to its shore power plan between 2024 and 2026.  Among them are Barcelona, Hamburg, Valencia, Marseille, Copenhagen, and five in Italy at Genoa, La Spezia, Civitavecchia, Naples and Trieste, plus at the company’s new cruise terminal in Miami that will become fully operational next year.

MSC Cruises has categorised its strategy to achieve net zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 2050 for its marine operations into three pillars of activity; ship and engine technology – which includes shore power connectivity – operational efficiency and renewable fuels

The Company operates in more than 100 countries around the world, offering cruises across five continents, calling at more than 300 destinations and welcoming more than 180 different nationalities on board.

MSC EURIBIA CONNECTS TO SHORE POWER IN KIEL

MSC EURIBIA CONNECTS TO SHORE POWER IN KIEL

MSC Euribia at the weekend connected to the shore power facility at the Ostuferhafen cruise terminal in Kiel for the first time as part of MSC Cruises‘ flagship’s summer season from the north German port.

Kiel’s local power grid supplied electricity for all of the vessel’s operations while at berth to eliminate the ship’s direct emissions at the port with her engines switched off.

MSC Euribia is scheduled to use shore power up to 20 times in Kiel during the sailing season.

Bunkering of liquefied natural gas (LNG) fuel was also undertaken at Kiel before the ship set sail on her 7-night voyage to Copenhagen in Denmark and a range of Norwegian fjord ports.

This was the first time these two processes have taken place simultaneously.

MSC Euribia is one of four ships in MSC Cruises‘ fleet that will offer summer cruises in Northern Europe with MSC Virtuosa, MSC Poesia and MSC Preziosa also taking advantage of shore power at ports during the season at Southampton, Warnemunde and Hamburg, respectively.

MSC Preziosa two weeks ago successfully connected to the shore power facility in Hamburg’s Cruise Centre Steinwerder for the first time.

Michele Francioni, Chief Energy Transition Officer, MSC Cruises, said, “We made a commitment to increase our use of shore power whenever it becomes available to us, and we are pleased with this new milestone we achieved in Kiel at the weekend and two weeks ago in Hamburg for MSC Preziosa.

“We now need more ports across Europe and beyond to provide shore power so that we can further reduce local air emissions. We will retrofit three additional ships in 2024 – MSC Magnifica, MSC Musica and MSC Splendida – with shore power connectivity to ensure that our ships are ready for plug into local electricity grids wherever the infrastructure allows. This further demonstrates our commitment to, and continued progress towards, decarbonisation, as well as reducing emissions from our vessels while berthed in ports.”

MSC Cruises’ vessels in 2023 connected to shore power with 44 port calls and by the end of this year the plan, based on the known availability of port infrastructure, is for at least 220 connections to local power, when 16 of line’s fleet of 22 vessels will be equipped with shore power connectivity.

MSC Fantasia,  MSC Poesia and MSC Preziosa were retrofitted last year, and more ships will be retrofitted in the future as the ports on their sailing itineraries make shore power available.

MSC Euribia is the second ship in MSC Cruises’ fleet powered by LNG and one of the most energy-efficient vessels in the industry. She began operations in June 2023 following MSC World Europa’s launch in December 2022.

MSC Cruises remains committed to LNG as a critical pathway towards maritime decarbonisation. Fossil LNG offers immediate greenhouse gas emission reductions compared to conventional marine fuels and a direct pathway to renewable alternatives like bio-LNG and synthetic renewable LNG.

The company has three new LNG ships on order, all in the World Class vessel design, with one option for an additional unit.

MSC World America will join the fleet in April 2025, MSC World Asia in 2026 and a vessel currently known as World Class 4 will be delivered in 2027 by French shipbuilder Chantiers de l’Atlantique.

“CLIFFHANGER” – THE ONLY OVER-WATER SWING RIDE AT SEA, COMING EXCLUSIVELY TO MSC WORLD AMERICA

MSC CRUISES INTRODUCES “CLIFFHANGER” – THE ONLY OVER-WATER SWING RIDE AT SEA, COMING EXCLUSIVELY TO MSC WORLD AMERICA

  • State-of-the-art attraction will tower 50m above the ocean
  • Debuting on MSC World America, MSC Cruises’ upcoming U.S. flagship, due to enter service in April 2025

Geneva, Switzerland – 9 April 2024 – MSC Cruises today unveiled Cliffhanger, the only over-water swing ride at sea, which will debut exclusively aboard MSC World America when the ship enters service in April 2025. The swing will tower above the new U.S. flagship’s top deck, nestled in the heart of the ship’s Family Aventura district and beckoning thrill seekers who want a rush of excitement.

Cliffhanger’s four seats start off close to the deck before powered arms lift them into the starting position—up and out over the edge of the ship. From there, riders are propelled back and forth, high above the waterline and dangling 50m above the ocean below. The one-of-a-kind, edge-of-your-seat thrill ride will have guests feeling the wind in their hair as their view oscillates between the water below and the sky above.

MSC World America is set to become MSC Cruises’ newest U.S. flagship when she is named at PortMiami on April 9, 2025. Guests will experience a new world of cruising as they explore seven distinct districts, each with its own atmosphere, facilities and experiences waiting to be explored. MSC World America’s districts allow guests of all ages to choose their own vacation adventure and get the most out of their time on board.

During the ship’s inaugural season, MSC World America will sail from Miami with 7-night itineraries to some of the most sought-after destinations in the Eastern and Western Caribbean, all with stops at Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve – MSC Cruises’ unique private island paradise in The Bahamas.

MSC World America is carefully designed to help reduce her impact on the environment. The ship runs on LNG, a lower-emissions fuel, and is ready for renewable energy sources. Shore power connectivity, where available, reduces emissions by allowing the ship’s engines to be switched off in port. Smart technology is used throughout the ship to ensure guests can travel in comfort while keeping energy and water use low. A robust onboard recycling program minimizes waste, and even the propellers are designed to reduce noise and avoid disturbing marine life.

Ship environmental information

At launch, MSC World America will be one of the most energy-efficient cruise ships in the world, surpassing all design requirements under the International Maritime Organization’s Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI). The ship’s latest-generation engines will reduce greenhouse gases emissions (GHG) by up to 20 percent, along with an 85 percent reduction in nitrogen oxide emissions and a nearly total elimination of sulphur oxide and particulate emissions. The ship is capable of running on Bio-LNG and Synthetic Renewable LNG, either of which would achieve greenhouse gas emissions reductions of up to 100 percent.

Wastewater is treated to a very high quality that exceeds the standards in place at many shoreside municipal wastewater treatment systems worldwide and meets the strictest international IMO standards, including the so-called Baltic standard.

The ship is fitted with advanced waste management systems to reduce, reuse, and recycle the waste generated on board.

MSC Cruises has reduced the intensity of its ship operations by 33.5 percent since 2008, and the company will achieve a 40 percent reduction ahead of the IMO 2030 target. Far beyond simply finding further operational efficiencies, MSC Cruises is embracing new technologies and identify paths for switching to non-carbon and renewable fuels, while working with fuel providers and other partners on using Bio-LNG and Synthetic Renewable LNG in the near term.

Ship environmental information

At launch, MSC World America will be one of the most energy-efficient cruise ship designs in the world, ahead of all design norms required by the International Maritime Organization (Energy Efficiency Design Index (EEDI) Thanks to MSC World America’s latest generation engines, the ship’s greenhouse gases emissions (GHG) will be reduced by up to 20%. At the same time, sulphur oxides and particulates will be virtually eliminated, her nitrogen oxide emissions will be reduced by up to 85%. Thanks to the engine technology, the ship is ready for Bio-LNG and Synthetic Renewable LNG. and will then achieve greenhouse gas emissions reductions of up to 100 per cent.

Wastewater is treated to a very high quality that is of a better standard than many shoreside municipal wastewater treatment systems worldwide. Our technology meets the strictest international IMO standards – including the so-called Baltic standard.

The ship is fitted with advanced waste management systems to reduce, reuse, and recycle the waste generated on board.

The emissions intensity of our ship operations has decreased by 33.5% since 2008, and we will achieve a 40% reduction ahead of the IMO 2030 target. Achieving net zero emissions will require more than finding further operational efficiencies: we are embracing new technologies and switching to non-carbon and renewable fuels. We are working with fuel providers and other partners on using Bio-LNG and Synthetic Renewable LNG today.

MSC WORLD EUROPA SUCCESSFULLY CONNECTS TO SHORE POWER FOR THE FIRST TIME IN THE MEDITERRANEAN SEA

MSC WORLD EUROPA SUCCESSFULLY CONNECTS TO SHORE POWER FOR THE FIRST TIME IN THE MEDITERRANEAN SEA

18/12/2023

Geneva, Switzerland, 18 December 2023 – MSC Cruises continues to advance its commitment to environmental sustainability by successfully connecting MSC World Europa to shore power in the port of Valetta, Malta – the first operational shore power facility in the Mediterranean.

The line is committed to the use of shore power wherever it is available, as it is an integral part of the company’s journey towards net zero greenhouse gas emission operations by 2050.  Using shore power allows a ship to connect to the local power grid and removes the need to keep a ship’s engine running, which eliminates direct emissions while the vessel is connected in port.

MSC Cruises performed the first tests earlier this year at Valletta and the experience gained has contributed to refining the shore power implementation process.  MSC World Europa from now on will connect to the shore power facilities while calling in Valetta. The ship will call every week throughout the whole of next year and 2025.

Since 2017, every new ship joining the MSC Cruises fleet has been equipped with a shore power connection and plans are underway to retrofit ships. The line has been able to increase the number of port calls utilising shore power electricity as more ports introduce shore power facilities. The historic connection in Valetta, follows the recent successful connections in Northern Europe – including Warnemünde in Germany, the Norwegian ports at Bergen, Aalesund and Haugesund, and Southampton in the UK. Earlier this year, MSC Cruises inaugurated the new shore power facility in Kiel, Germany.

MSC Cruises aims to add at least 15 new ports to its shore power plan between 2024 and 2026, focusing on a number of ports in Italy, including Genoa, La Spezia, Civitavecchia, Naples and Trieste, as well as prominent ports such as Barcelona, Hamburg, Valencia, Marseille, Copenhagen, and the new cruise terminal in Miami that opens next year, will feature shore power capabilities. MSC Cruises acknowledges the importance of collaboration with ports and regions in achieving sustainable maritime practices. The company signed a Memorandum of Understanding to enhance shore power facilities in the Baltic Sea area, and similar commitments are being pursued with other ports in the Mediterranean Sea.

Michele Francioni, SVP Cost Optimisation & Process Improvement, MSC Cruises, said, “Our shore power plan demonstrates that we are fully committed to reducing emissions from our ships. Using shore power is a major step forward because it allows us to eliminate a ship’s direct emissions whilst berthed. We need more ports across Europe and beyond to introduce shore power as quickly as possible so that we can further reduce local air emissions. We will ensure our ships are ready to connect wherever the facilities are available to us. Connecting MSC World Europa to the shore power in Valletta is a proud achievement and we are grateful for the collaboration and excellent cooperation with Transport Malta, Infrastructure Malta and the Maltese authorities, as well as with the Cruise Port of Valetta.”

MSC World Europa was MSC Cruises’ first vessel to be powered by liquefied natural gas. As one of the best performing large cruise ships operating in the world regarding CO2eq emissions per passenger, MSC World Europa represents a major step forward on MSC Cruises’ journey towards achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. MSC World Europa is also among the first contemporary cruise ships to incorporate solid oxide fuel cell technology, with trial tests showing very promising results.
