You ‘re headed to the scenic Tongass Narrows -one of the most picturesque locations in Alaska. Hump island -the biggest oyster farm in the state—is located here.
Excursion Details
Embarking on this journey will include an approximately 30-minute narrated van ride along a coastal road that brings you to Bonfire Bay. Here, you will board a heated, indoor boat, for a swift 15-minute cruise to the Hump island Oyster Farm. Keep an eye out for whales, seals, sea lions and eagles on the route to your destination. The outside deck offers unobstructed views and photo opportunities.
Upon arrival the oyster farm team will provide an engaging 30-minute introduction to the facility, the oyster-growing process, and the cultivation of the shellfish from the width of a thumbnail to market size. Immerse yourselves with the thriving, prickly, smooth, slippery and slimy endemic marine wildlife of the clear and clean Southeast Alaska waters the educational hands-on touch tank.
Hear stories of life in a small Alaskan community. Footage will be displayed from an underwater drone that gives you a feel for the ecosystem surrounding the oyster rafts and the oysters ‘ food sources. Indulge in a pure ocean-to-table experience at the floating Oyster Bar, where you ‘ll enjoy fresh, locally harvested oysters and kelp.
Following your experience, you ‘ll have a brief, approximately 15-minute stop at the gift shop before returning to the ship via boat and van.
Important Information: Participants must weigh a minimum of 40lbs. Guest are advised to wear sturdy non-skid walking shoes. Expect uneven surfaces, multiple steps and a marine ramp from the pier to the boat, which may be steep at a low tide. Wildlife sightings are likely but not guaranteed. The minimum age to participate is 4 years old
