NATURE’S HAVEN: EXPLORING BERTHAS BEACH AND THE FALKLAND FLATLANDS

Set off on an unforgettable adventure as you journey to Berthas Beach, a stunning stretch of sand nestled along the picturesque coastline of the Falkland Islands. This immersive experience lasts approximately four and a half hours, during which you will witness the harmonious coexistence of ocean and wetland wildlife. Your adventure begins with a scenic coach ride that winds through the rugged beauty of the Falklands.

As you traverse the main road network, you’ll be captivated by the unique geological formations that Charles Darwin himself catalogued, with the landscape unfolding in all its raw splendour. After about an hour of travel, you will exchange the coach for an off-road vehicle, setting off on an exhilarating 30-minute ride across the flatlands.

This journey through the flatlands offers glimpses of some of the Falklands’ most elusive waterfowl, including the elegant Black-necked Swan and other charming species such as the Chiloe Wigeon, Silver Teal, Speckled Teal, and Silvery Grebe. Upon reaching the breathtaking Berthas Beach, you’ll find yourself in the midst of an impressive colony of 800 Gentoo penguins, a sight that will surely delight nature lovers. Berthas Beach is not only a haven for wildlife but also a botanical paradise, with over 80 different flowering plants recorded, five of which are endemic to the Falkland Islands.

As you explore, keep an eye out for the stunning Dog Orchid, vibrant Yellow Violet, fragrant Falkland lavender, and the national flower, the delicate Pale Maiden. You will have approximately one hour to soak in the incredible scenery and observe the wildlife before embarking on the return journey to Stanley.

The return trip will take you once more through the enchanting flatlands and back along the main road network, allowing you to re-live in your mind the natural wonders you’ve encountered. This excursion is a celebration of the Falklands’ unique ecology and an opportunity to connect with the stunning environment that defines this remarkable destination.
